GMaps Downloads - 2007/07/01 09:55
Due to the recent licensing issues around Joomla extensions, I have decided to test out a "subscription" based business model. The plugins and modules for GMaps are now only available with a subscription for support. For those who subscribe, I will continue to provide quality support to ensure you successfully deployment GMaps.
I am trying to determine whether or not it is feasible to support a GPL-compliant commercial model. This will determine whether or not other extensions will be released.
If you have any questions and/or complaints, please contact me at info@firestorm-technologies.com.

You have lots of positive reviews on your page (pageranked, even) at the Joomla! Extensions site.
Most of the reviews speak about the mambot. This change renders ALL those reviews inaccurate, misleading and questionable.
Why mess all that up? When you have other options?
You promote a free module and bot there. You need to have them here for people.
When you try to download them here, you are forced to register.
THEN, after registration, you find out they are commercial! Bad form.
Why not release a SECOND version of the component, which is commercial, and DOUBLE your exposure and traffic from Joomla!?
Make the others modules commercial. Make the updates commercial. Make additional modules commercial and release them.
You need to have the advertised component, bot and module here, as described and reviewed on the extensions site.
That seems more condusive to business than changing the license AFTER you got reviews and PR5 kisses from Google on this site.
BTW, you still have not changed your license or description there, even after several people here complained. And you have not changed your pages here, to reflect the commercial changes.
Why get people angry and expose your fine GPR5 extension listing to angry ex-prospective customers willing to post new reviews and report inaccurate ones?
Put the mambot and one module in the free docman category and you are good to go. Lock your forums and charge for them.
Look at what you learned from rockettheme and you see WHY forums can be reason enough to pay. BTW: You can't model RT exactly. They are templates, not components. Search for what Andy said about it.
Or look how fabrik does it.

As I read the listing at extensions.joomla.org, I agree with your comments in that the plugin (only the one that renders maps within content) is an important piece and it may be misleading. Therefore, I have released it to the public download area. If others have paid for the support plan only wanting the mambot to embed within content, please contact me and we can discuss.
The code itself is still GPL. I am just offering certain extensions to those who actually support the effort. I don't consider those commercial because I cannot, nor will I, attach a commercial license to them. Indirectly, I can see your point though.
As for the registration flow, that is more to do with the component I am using I believe.
My intentions here are nothing more than to recoup dev and support costs. Too many people expect everything for free. I don't want to shut down or lock down the community site because I want people there to be a facility where the community can solve problems. I just won't participate.

Chris, I'm considering paying for a subscription but don't want to go near Paypal, any other options?
