Currently, there isn't a configuration option to change the marker icon for the cb plugin. That is on my things to do list but am not sure if/when I can get to it. There should be an easy way to hack the code to do this and that I hope to put a KB entry by end of weekend. No promises though.
As for the # of markers, I haven't tested it with a large number of markers. Some have mentioned that once you get to about 500+ markers, it starts dragging. The issue is on the "nearby users map" only. I am hoping to get someones users profile table to test locally.
The administrator has disabled public write access.
