J156 + Gmaps How to? - 2008/09/18 10:04
I'm probably being right thick here. But I'm trying to get Gmaps working on J1.5.6, it's installed fine with legacy mode on, I've done various configuring in the admin which is all OK & created markers, but I can't for the life of me work out how to get a map to display within the site from a menu item, basically because I can't actually work out how to create a menu item for it. The closest I can get is an external link, which then of course opens the map up in a new browser window, which it does perfectly, but it's not what I want. Another problem I seem to have is that the mod_gmapslist when enabled causes the site to fail completely with a blank screen.

I really only spend time supporting subscribers .. sorry but I view my time of some value. I do try to help when time permits.
However, your issue is somewhat interesting to me. This obviously is the basic version. What I would check first for any issues if the map doesn't display is the format of the latitude and longitude must be in decimal format (i.e. 89.231232, -124.232341).
If you create a component menu item, it should go straight to a map list. That is what I'd do. If you are looking for an individual map, there really isn't a way to do it to my knowledge.
I personally haven't seen that issue on the mod_gmapslist module. So I really can't say. I would have to dig deeper into this.

Hi, & thanks.
The problem would appear to be that Gmaps doesn't appear at all in the menu setup (this is 1.5.6 in legacy mode) to allow a component item for it to be created.
Whether this is because of the issue with the mod_gmapslist, or not I don't know. But it has to be high on the list of probable causes. If this can't be enabled without the site turning totally blank I can't see how a component item could be added for it.
Also I hesitate to mention this, since you did reply, but it does seem a bit bizarre that no support is offered other than to paid subscribers. I, like I'm totally sure, many others, wouldn't pay for any software until I knew it actually worked. I presumed this was the purpose of the free version. To show what it can do, and that it does actually work, and to persuade people to part with cash. Which, if the software works, I'm sure they will do. It's failed in this regard, and the slightly belligerent tone of only offering support to paid subscribers because you value your time only compounds this failure.

Most support for purely open source efforts are handled via the communities (hibernate, jboss, etc.) and full support are offered via subscriptions, etc. The level of support then is dependent on the activity within the community. As I said, I do help at times as time permits. For everyone one who has issues, there are several more that do not. I do believe those who I have worked with are extremely satisfied in my responsiveness.
I have no idea as to why it won't show up as a menu component item in the backend. That module list shouldn't impact that.
As I can't recreate such an issue, what I would do is to delete all of the gmaps table and uninstall the component and reinstall it.
let me know.

OK. Here's what I've tried.
Uninstalling again. But this time also removing the tables from MySQL within phpmyadmin. Reinstalling. This time the component does now appear within the menu manager, and so a menu item can be created. But unfortunately this now results in a blank screen when accessed from the frontend.
The component menu also doesn't operate as this too results in a blank screen, as well as having no options available.

I see that there is a previous post with the same problem, which doesn't appear to have resolved.
The blank screens occur with the list module both in publish and unpublished states.

Please email me on this and lets see what the issue is. What version of MySQL are you using?
