Community Builder GMaps Plugin PDF Print E-mail
This extension is available to Subscribers only

After several inquires, we've finally developed a plugin extension for the Community Builder product.  Our extension provides two tabs available to the user.  The first tab will display only the location of the user whose profile is being used.  The second tab displays the same as the first tab PLUS all users within a geographical radius of the user whose profile is being viewed.

The plugin provides configurations for you to define which columns in the com_profiler table are used to geocode your users location.  Only five columns are possible.  The model provides for address, city, state, zipcode and country; however, you can enter any column that exists to properly geocode the users.   You can enter anywhere from one to five columns.  If the user cannot be properly geocoded, then the user will not be mapped.

Other configurations include:

  • Privacy Column - used to hide a users profile from being mapped
  • Enable Geocoding - can turn geocoding on/off.
The plugin can be used in conjunction with the other geocoding plugin for CB when turning this plugins geocoding off.

Each tab available is individually configurable by the site administrator.  Plus, two maps may appear on the same page.  However, the maps will not work if displayed in TAB mode on the profile.  Only if the map is on the very first tab will this work.

Some geographical areas are not supported by the geocoding and mapping facilities used with this plugin.

Compatibility

This extension has only been tested with Joomla 1.0.x.

Known Limitations / Concerns

We have had reports that performance becomes an issue on sites where a large number (1000+) of profiles are involved.  A subscriber has posted a batch solution to solve this problem in our forums.
